You only use one of each of the 3 types of powers (physical/sensory/mystical) per member of your fighting force.
Take the lower number of either (your clan size) or (5 x your level), maximum (500 + zombies).
...That is the size of the group that you fight with when you go to battle. It is also the number of each type of power you need for maximum effectiveness. The game automatically uses the best powers you have. Any extra, lower level powers will not show up on the list when you do battle. So, say you have 10 people in your clan, and for physical powers you have 8 manic strength, 5 claws and 5 fangs. You can only use 10, so you'll see something like "your clan fought with 8 manic strength and 2 claws". 3 claws and all the fangs are dumped because they are the lesser powers and you don't have enough people to use them.

To add to that, you can buy powers out the wazoo.. but if you don't have enough clan, they won't all get used. Or, if your level isn't high enough.
Example:
Chuck is level 10.
He has 60 clan.
He buys 60 physical powers, 60 sensory, and 60 mystical.
When he fights, he's only going to use 50 from each category... because his level limits him to 50:
Level 10 x 5 = 50 clan who can fight for him.
When he reaches level 11, he can have 55 clan fight for him; at level 12 it'd be 60 clan, and so on. So, for the number of powers he currently owns, he's gotta go up two more levels before all the powers he owns can be used in a fight.
While we *can* keep adding clan past 500, so as to continue having enough clan to support Companions, the limit on how many clan you can use in a *fight* is 500. So basically, once you hit level 100, adding clan beyond 500 doesn't help your fighting---though it's necessary if you want to keep adding those money-making companions---because each companion requires "x" number of clan to oversee it.
So, if you have ten clan, and you buy a companion that takes 3 clan to oversee it, you're good. You can buy two more companions that have the same "clan oversight" rate---but at that point, you've got 9 of your clan of 10 overseeing companions... so if you want to add more companions, you've gotta add more clan *first*, to cover the new ones.
Going back to fighting...
Say you've level 2 and have 10 clan members (which means all 10 can fight for you). You've bought 20 sets of Fangs, and 3 sets of Manic Strength, both from the "Physical Powers" list. You attack someone. When the game calculates the fight, it's going to say "You used 3 Manic Strengths, 7 Fangs" because 3+7=10; and it'll use the Manic Strengths *first* because they're a higher attack rating than Fangs are. You won't use *all* your Fangs, because you're not high enough level and you don't have enough clan to use more than 10 from each Power category: Physical, Sensory, and Mystical.
So in this fight, your calculations may look like this, if you've got enough powers for your clan that you're allowed to use for the level you're at:
"You attacked with 3 Manic Strengths, 7 Fangs, 2 Cause Terrors, 8 Charismas, 1 Cloak of Darkness, and 9 Rat Forms."
I'm not sure if it shows them in order of strongest power to weakest regardless of category, or it it shows each category (physical, sensory, mystical), in terms of which order they appear---but it'd look something like what I said above. I do know that it always shows the highest rated power(s) first. I *think* it goes down from there by strength of power for all three categories, rather than separating them out, but I'm not sure.
Hope all that helps! :-D
