It was getting late, the shop was packed and Lynn was wining on about chocolate or something. Mary Gley felt like sinking to the ground, putting her head in her hand and sobbing her heart out. She peered down at the scribbled list, struggling to decipher her own hurried handwriting. Tuna. Yes that must be it. She left Henry to guard the trolly, Lynn and the Cookcoo, who watched her in silence. She felt a surge of anger that it was Lynn, her own daughter who was making a scene while that infernal child just stood and watched. She felt like it was accusing her, trying to make out she was a bad mother. She wasn't and she knew it. And she was certainly much better than her sister in law, that child's mother. No she thought as she walked off down the isles, she had done nothing to deserve having the Cookcoo dumped on her. I mean how many other women had to look after the children of their husband's druggy little sisters. She plucked a tin from the shelf, not caring about the price, and marched off back towards the children.
Even before she got there she knew something was wrong. Her heart beat increased as she turned the corner to see two children standing by a loaded trolly; a mousy haired boy of around six and a tearful blonde girl a little younger. Lynn and Henry. The Cookcoo was gone.

Nathan watched as Mary argued with Lynn, it was very unfair he thought, couldn't Lynn see that Mary was tired and busy. It was wrong to bother people when they were busy wasn't it. Colly had always said so. He missed Colly, he missed all his friends. It was a long time since he had seen them and Mary didn't listen when he tried to tell her he wanted to visit them. Mike didn't really listen either, he just said Nathan should make new friends. He didn't seem to get that the people around here just weren't the same.
He watched as Mary marched off. Henry was trying to get Lynn to stop crying and was paying no attention to him. That wasn't unusual. After a while Lynn and Henry had stopped paying much attention to him. They didn't even want to play with him half the time. Like Alli they called him Cookcoo, he wasn't sure what that meant, but thought it might be a sort of bird.
A woman in a red coat walked past, and Nathan followed her. Interested in her shiny shoes with their big buckles. Mary he reasoned, couldn't miss him if he wasn't gone long. She didn't notice him most of the time.

The first feeling that passed through Mary's head was shock, followed closely by a contrasting mixture of fear and relief. It was gone, just like that, gone. The relief however soon faded. Mike would kill her if she lost the child. She would never be able to live with his reaction.
She looked around wildly. There was no sign of the child. She grabbed Henry by the shoulder, a little too roughly perhaps,
"Henry. Where's Nathan? Where's the Cookcoo?"
Henry looked around blankly then shook his head, then removed his thumb and answered, "No."
Mary looked around once more. No sign of him. She stepped up to a dowdy middle age woman browsing the tinned tomatoes. She took a deep breath. Admitting that you had lost a small child wasn't something easy to do.
"Excuse me?"
The woman turned, "Yes."
"Um, have you seen a little boy. About this high." The woman looked blank but Mary continued none the less. "Skinny. Black hair. Green eyes. Wearing a navy jumper."
The woman shook her head, 'No sorry, why..."
Mary didn't wait to hear anymore, she grabbed Henry in one hand, Lynn with the other left the trolly where it was and hurried off down the elise. She had to find the child, she just had to. Where had the dammed thing got to.

Nathan had lost interest in the woman in the red coat. He wandered up to a nearby trolly. It was filled up with cakes and sweets and chocolate bars. He reached inn and pulled out a bar of dairy milk. No one noticed him. He unwrapped it as he wondered away, weaving between the legs of busy shoppers. Nobody so much as blinked and eye. It was as if the small child with the chocolate just didn't exist.
He walked up to another trolly, reaching up on tiptoe to see into the plastic baby chair in the front. The occupant stared down at him with wide blue eyes. Nathan smiled and waggled his chocolate covered fingers at the baby. It didn't move. Nathan stepped away from it, already bored and crouched down to examine the jars of honey on the bottom shelf.

Nathan turned away from the honey in time to see a tall lady walking towards him. Or at least in his direction. Her attention seemed to be fixed on the baby, whose mum and dad were arguing over the marmite and peanut butter. The lady was dressed in green, a long coat of some velvety material that reached down to her feet. Much more interesting than what most adults wore. Her feet were bare. Very odd thought Nathan. He placed the palm of his hand against the floor. Very cold. She must have though feet.
The woman lent over the baby, smiling down at it with large gold brown eyes. The baby smiled back. The woman lent down and picked up the baby. Nathan looked around, no one else seemed to mind this. Or at least no one was making the fuss adults usually did. In fact, they were all ignoring the woman, much like they were ignoring him.
The woman shifted the baby in her arms, then turned to leave. Doing so she caught sight of Nathan. She winked at him. One conspirator to another and pressed a finger to her lips. Then, still unnoticed by the baby's parents or any other adult she set off back down the elsie. After a moment's hesitation Nathan got up and followed.
